Happy SEVENTIETH 7️⃣0️⃣ to the biggest adv Happy SEVENTIETH 7️⃣0️⃣ to the biggest adventurer and inspiration! Riding a horse in Patagonia had been on mum’s bucket list since she was a little girl. Her banging on about it also left a lasting impression on me growing up. When I decided to go back to South America, I knew I had to finally get her out there. I called and asked her if she wanted to join me, with 2 weeks notice. She immediately said, “I’ve got a hair appointment. I’LL CANCEL IT!” (The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree 🍎🌳) She’s an icon, she’s a legend and she IS the moment. HAPPY BIRTHDAY MUM 🥳 (And yeah, I got it from my momma).

新年快乐 🎉 恭喜发财 🎆 On my last tr 新年快乐 🎉 恭喜发财 🎆

On my last trip back to China (for a while) I finally ticked Zhangjiajie off my bucket list. I remember hearing about these magical mountains when the first avatar movie came out in 2009 and I had been trying to visit ever since! Faced with a future of not being able to return to China, I went on a solo trip. 我爱中国 and I hope to get back when the time is right.

The year of the dragon 🐉 was one of the best for me - both professionally, with the BBC documentary and starting my new job at Reuters, as well as personally, building on already strong bonds with friends who have become family.

Slithering into the year of the snake 🐍 grateful, hopeful and with my cup full. 🍵
I’m very glad to see the positive reaction our B I’m very glad to see the positive reaction our BBC Eye documentary - “Troublemakers: Drugged, Framed and Detained” has received across multiple platforms. I hope it sparks more discussions on this topic, both in China and internationally, which is the only way to create change.

When I first heard about this story, I admit that I struggled to believe what people were telling me. Branding someone as mentally unwell immediately and purposefully undermines any valid concerns they might want to raise. I worked on this story for half a year and realised I had to reprogramme my unconscious biases.

I am so proud of the brave contributors who were willing to share their stories with me. Everyone’s situation was different and unique, so our approach to documenting their experience had to be, too. I was delighted to spend time with Junjie in New Zealand, who felt comfortable enough to go on camera to tell us about his ordeal. I am inspired by his bravery and wish that one day he gets the justice he so desperately needs. If anything, I hope this film, in some way, goes to giving him a little bit of transparency and maybe accountability… that remains to be seen.

It’s not easy to report on “China stories”, and throughout my career, it has only gotten harder. I’m very grateful to the BBC Eye Investigations unit for championing this important work and jumping every hurdle put in place to stop journalism like this from making it into the mainstream media.

Happy sixth birthday to the real G, my goddaughter Happy sixth birthday to the real G, my goddaughter! 🥳🎂🎈🥹. She lived in the apartment downstairs from me in Singapore until she was three. Today, it’s dawned on me that means she’s lived half her life with me in a different country. Expat life can suck like that. I miss being able to pop downstairs and pick her up for a little walk whenever we like, but the time we do spend together now is so precious. Here’s a memory dump I hope she will see one day. I love you Niamhy! ❤️❤️❤️

The Chapman’s Challenge - a 6.2km road and trail The Chapman’s Challenge - a 6.2km road and trail run (with 270m elevation!) around a Malaysian island and through its dense jungle, finished off by a 1km open water swim circling its Emerald Bay. Thanks to @curiouszoo for inviting and inspiring me. I never would have thought to attempt this type of challenge and I’m feeling very accomplished that we managed to place 21st and 22nd out of 44! We’ll be back next year to clinch the title! 🥇
✨ 上海的梦想 ✨ What a treat to be back in ✨ 上海的梦想 ✨ What a treat to be back in my second home, Shanghai. I spent the majority of my 20s here and hadn’t realised how dearly I missed the city. When I worked in China, I would always be frustrated by negative headlines in Western media that didn’t capture the complexities and nuances behind the news stories. Coming back, after five years China-watching from an outsider’s post-Covid lens, I remember how important it is to have boots on the ground and to understand things from the inside out. There is so much energy, excitement and LIFE happening in Shanghai right now and I’m here for that. 🇨🇳

And then I got a bus to Georgia 🇬🇪! Russia l And then I got a bus to Georgia 🇬🇪! Russia last invaded in 2008 and occupies 20% of Georgian land. The recent aggression is a fresh f u to people so recently terrorised by the Russian Red Army and subsequent Soviet era. 400,000 Russians have moved to Georgia (pop. 3.7 mill) since the war in Ukraine to escape conscription and the economic shit show. There is anti-Russia graffiti everywhere and I had to be quick to explain I wasn’t Russian. Tbilisi’s architecture is breathtaking, especially areas built during the brief 1918 to 1921 independence period, which reminded me so much of Shanghai’s Former French Concession (and even more so because the mansion houses were similarly partitioned during the Soviet era). The food is INCREDIBLE! Georgia was a meeting point on the Silk Road, so it’s a combination of the aromatics of the East and artisanal produce of the West and omfg the dumplings!!! Cut me and I bleed khinkali 🥟. It’s also the oldest wine producing country, but those pours were a bit too funky for me!🍷 This is the longest post, but Georgia has to be one of my favourite places I’ve ever visited!

And then we went to Armenia 🇦🇲… I randomly And then we went to Armenia 🇦🇲… I randomly met @shenwei007 (a big, Chinese, Weibo blogger) on the flight from Istanbul to Yerevan (what an epic city). I hadn’t seen him since 2014! We went on a spontaneous trip to a lake, which got lost in translation and we ended up on a Russian-language church tour (whoops). Everyone in Yerevan was so friendly towards us, and seemed to be happy about the influx of Russian tourists and boost to the local economy since the war in Ukraine (more about that later). We met a lot of young people who had fought in the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh War and were still suffering (alongside the generational trauma of the genocide). A few days after we left, Azerbaijan mounted another offensive and the breakaway republic no longer exists.

China has cancelled “sissy men.” The country’s broadcast regulator has banned them appearing on TV & online, and top politicians have suggested the move is a matter of national survival. So why is the Chinese Communist Party so adamant on eradicating “feminine men”? 🧵1/10
